(About the creatures, not the scam)

CryptoGram

Brief: Come up with a concept for an AR app that encourages people to explore the parks and trails of Duluth Minnesota. Then design the brand and create a proof of concept using Figma. My app was a Cryptid photography app which transitioned to a horror game at night.

Tools: Illustrator, After Effects, Figma and Photoshop.

Design Descions: The name is just a standard Instagram parody. The logo is a pun of the Latin roots Crypto: hidden and Gram Mark (usually in refrence to writting). It also serves as a refrence to the dual nature of the app as a cute fun photography app and a horror game.

Concept Explanation: The idea is an AR photography app where the user takes pictures of cryptids. The app also has a night mode activated after sunset which introduces a horror element to the app.

Once you arrive at a park users will open the app press start and leave it on in the background. The app will only work in registered park areas.

As the user goes through the park audio or tactile (phone vibrations) cues will occur and increase in intensity until they peak.

When they peak the user can take out the phone and scan the area where a creature will be running around the trails.

The user can then take a photo of the creature which can be accessed through a photo gallery (which also has information on the creatures folklore) and creatures with photos of them can be projected onto the environment through the camera where the user can view them.

Night mode: Similar mechanics with a horror twist. In reality, this is quite a bad idea to encourage people to go into the woods at night but it seemed like a really fun idea to design.

Creatures and audio cues take on a horrific form. Instead of frolicking around the environment they charge at the user. The user still takes a photo but in this version, the flash is used to scare the monster away. If the user fails their health goes down and after it’s empty they’re locked out till the next light.

Barred to 18+ on startup has the option to play in day mode instead, also has conditions that must be met in order to play: must be in a group, have a source of light, alert someone of where you going and expected return, etc.
