Family History, Coat of Arms

Brief: Research family history and background regarding initial immigration to the United States. Then create a coat of arms with an animated variant, and integrate both into AR using the app Artvive.

Tools: Illustrator, After Effects, InDesign, and Artvive.

Design decisions: The center of the coat of arms is based on the professions of my ancestors as smiths, miners, and railway workers. The compass/sun represents their initial migration. The sun is a reference to the Celtic legends of Avalon, a land of resurrection and healing, said to lie in the west on the path of the sun. The sun also ties into the Baltic legend of Kalvis, a smith deity said to create the sun every morning. The Moon phases were placed to represent the passage of time and generations and to work with the sun to symbolize the cycle of death and rebirth and the otherworlds frequently discussed in my ancestral mythologies.

Verde Valley song dogs:

Brief: The project started with writing a paper about a small town and an animal. Then we swapped the city paper with a classmate's and created a name and brand for a soccer team based on the combo.

For me, it was coyotes (also called song dogs) and Sedona, Arizona (which the Verde Valley travels through).

Tools: Illustrator and Photoshop.

Design decisions: went heavy into an aggressive style through sharp edges and saturated colors for the team to stand out and look sick. The font choice and the skull were meant to look aggressive and reference the deserts of Arizona.
